Lincoln City Moves Youth Academy to Riseholme College

24th September 2018

Lincoln’s high-flying football team, Lincoln City, has moved its promising youth academy programme to state-of-the-art facilities, based at Riseholme College’s Showground Campus.

The move, which took place over the summer, will see the team’s youth academy programme train, and study, at the college’s £24million campus based on the Lincolnshire Showground.

Lincoln City CEO, Liam Scully, is delighted with the move;

“For our Youth Academy to have access to the first-rate facilities at Riseholme College is a huge benefit for everyone associated with the football club. We are always looking to improve our offering to prospective new players as well as giving the current scholars the best facilities for them to improve as players and as people.

“For any aspiring young footballer, this provides the perfect setting for them to concentrate on their dream of a successful future career, be it on or off the football field.”

The youth academy will make use of the college’s multi-million pound investment in sports facilities, including its fully-equipped strength and conditioning suite, a multi-use sports hall and FIFA-standard all-weather 4G pitch.

The youth team will also study alongside their training, helping them to secure an academic qualification while they aspire for professional stardom.

Curriculum and Learning Manager for Sport, Mike Ridley, said; “We’re really pleased to have collaborated with Lincoln City on this youth programme as it also offers something unique for up-and-coming athletes in the region.

“The qualifications that these young people will acquire as part of the programme will not only provide a ‘back-up’, should they not realise their professional sporting dreams, but it will also open up a wealth of careers off the field – for every one player on the field, there are countless support staff that contribute to the team’s success.”

Students will complete a BTEC Level 3 programme in sport, coaching and development, and will see them combining a daily training regime, led by Lincoln City coaches, with academic lectures covering nutrition, strength and conditioning, rehabilitation and coaching. They will also be given the opportunity to complete work experience with sports clubs in the region as part of their studies, helping them to develop a range of skills which will allow them to progress both on and off the pitch.

Chief Executive and Principal at Riseholme College, Bill Meredith, said it was the right time to invest in sport in the region;

“The value of sport in education is important - we have always seen a clear link between sport and other skills whether it be health and fitness, or team building and decision making – and that’s why we believe it was the right time to invest in our sport offering at Riseholme College.

“Sport is a big part of life at the college and we aim to encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle amongst our students, through involvement in sporting and fitness activity, as well as providing a platform for those who have the ability and desire to be successful at the highest level possible.

“To be able to work with the county’s top football team and help to retain the very best sporting talent in the region is something I’m particularly proud of. I’m pleased to welcome the Lincoln City players and coaching staff to our fantastic facilities at the Riseholme Showground campus.

“This academy also brings with it unparalleled access to the best coaching staff for both the academy players and our students. Our surroundings, facilities and excellent reputation for education mean that we can really nurture rising talent and offer an experience that no other college or academy can provide.”
